As recently as a hundred or so years ago, hollowed logs were used as pipes to move water. They were joined together in ostensibly water tight fitted connections.
This pipe came from a mill in the Ottawa Valley area.
You can see how the one end is shaped to fit snug into another piece. The other end has been blocked and a slot cut to direct the water out. It is 8 feet long and 5.5" square in cross section.
